The About Me page is the 2nd most important page on your website. It’s the second most visited, too. They won’t get to it if your homepage sucks or if your homepage makes it clear that you aren’t nicheing in what they are struggling with (this is a good thing.) If an ideal client digs your homepage, they will check out your About Me.

Your About Me isn’t really about you. It’s about what your potential clients need to know about you to feel safe choosing you. They assume you’re a therapist already– you don’t need to go into a bunch of credential-heavy stuff to start. You can do that at the end if it’s something your ideal client cares about.  For instance, if your ideal client is looking for a particular type of education & you went to an Ivy, sure, put that in your copy. But if your ideal client isn’t that picky about it and you drop “Harvard” in there… well you know how people respond to that already. It could be a pro or a con depending on your ideal client.

We have more robust guidance in the Badass Website module as well as in the Easy, Effective Website Copy templates. Your About Me is a place you definitely need to invest some time. Show up as yourself, not the overly-professionalized version of yourself. If you don’t wear suits in session, for instance, don’t wear them in your photos on this page. If you don’t use $5 words in session, don’t use them here. Everything else I want to tell you about how to write your homepage copy is in the resources mentioned above.

800 words is a lot of text, so be sure to review the example section blocks below (A1-A9) for some ideas about how your web-designer might use different page layouts, images, or graphic elements to break up some of that text and make it more cognitively digestible. Make note of any examples that you really like or really dislike and be prepared to share that information with your designer.
